Paint in Italy... was founded in
1984:The culmination of New York (color-realist) painter Diana
Willis’ long time visions of creating painting workshops in
Italy where artists could enjoy undisturbed painting time, share
ideas and learn new techniques. |
| |
|
The first two summer workshops were in the
village of Varenna, Lake Como, housed in the Villa Cipressi.
After several years there, the Villa fell into disrepair and
became unsuitable. |
| |
|
In1986 the workshops were moved across the
lake to Cadenabbia. Accommodations were made in the stately,
4-star Hotel Bellevue. From that date until 2001, it was known
as the workshops’ home base. |
| |
|
Initially attracting artists at all levels of
accomplishments, the enrollment was expanded some years later to
include easy-to-learn instruction for people who have never
painted before. Paint in Italy... is the only workshop to
offer this opportunity to beginners. |

In 1997 new types of workshops were initiated
at the Academia Belle Arte in Como, a separate entity, which
offered classes in painting restoration, papermaking, collage,
sculpture, portraiture, and figure painting. The following year,
another prestigious workshop was incorporated into the schedule
- Bordighera, a flower-filled city on the Italian Riviera, near
the French border where Claude Monet painted. Here, students
found lovely accommodations in the 4-star Hotel Villa Elisa.
Visits to medieval Dolceaqua and the many sites where Monet
painted made this a must-return-again workshop. |

In 2001 when the owners of the Hotel Bellevue
decided to sell after a half century of ownership, Ms. Willis
once again had to discover a new home base. In 2002 Paint in Italy...offered
new workshops in Bellagio, one of Italy’s most beautiful,
people-friendly villages on the lake. Here participants
found stunning accommodations in
the Hotel Belvedere with balconies, dining rooms, and beautiful
gardens facing the lake and pool. |

|
Since 2002, Pescallo, a tiny fishing village just below the hotel's gardens, the Bellagio waterfront and Menaggio have become favorite en plein aire painting sites. In 2006, we will return, once again, to our home in Bellagio at the beautiful Hotel Belvedere and are pleased to introduce our new location, Sorrento. While in Sorrento, workshop attendees will stay at the four star Grand Hotel Vesuvio with spectacular views of the Sea of Naples. As with all of our workshops, all accommodations have private baths and breathtaking water views. The workshop price includes daily breakfast and dinner, one-on-one painting lessons with visits to exciting en plein aire painting sites, instructor's demonstrations and much, much more. Please see the individual workshop web page for further details.
